Secura Automatic Electric Milk Frother and Warmer
We review the 250ml MMF-003 vs. the 425ml MF-020

Don’t you just love sitting down to a fresh, hot latte or cappuccino in the morning? What’s your favorite? Is it the latte with the perfectly steamed milk? Or maybe it’s the cappuccino with the delicate cloud of foam on a wonderful mix of espresso and milk.

Whatever it is, wouldn’t it be great if you didn’t have to wait until you hit the coffee shop before taking the first heavenly sip? What if you could do this without leaving home?

Even better, not even having to get dressed…

You can if you have an electric milk frother and warmer prepped and ready for duty next to your coffee machine.

In this review, we’re going to talk about two popular models of the Secura Automatic milk frother: the MMF–003 250 ml and the MF–020 425 ml.

If you know you want the 250ml MMF-003 Secura milk frother, it’s here on Amazon. If you prefer the 425ml MF-020, click here.

The plan is to answer all of your questions so that by the end, you’ll have a good idea of which model suits you best.

Click in the table below for any pressing question, or carry on reading.

But first, let’s talk about frothers in general…

What Is a Frother?

A frother produces that rich, bubbly, and airy cloud of milk you love so much on your coffee. And that can be any milk of your choice.

For most folks it’s cow’s milk, whether that’s full fat, skim, lactose-free or whatever. But it could be soy, rice, almond, oat or even hemp milk.

What Does a Frother Do?

A frother uses hot steam or a physical mixer called a whisk to agitate the milk. This creates a mass of bubbles that rise to the surface to form that bubbly cloud.

All just waiting for you to spoon or pour it off on to your rich cup of espresso.

Why Do I Need A Frother?

There are manual ways to froth and steam your milk. Unfortunately, these are a little messy and don’t always get exactly the results you want. An automatic frother/steamer can make great foam time after time.

A frother is ideal for that quick cappuccino or latte. Or a standard Americano with a little amount of frothy milk. And you know it’s made the way you like it.

So, if you’re a budding latte artiste, listen up.

What Makes a Good Frother/Steamer?

For a good quality unit, look for these three key things:

  1. Easy to use for frothing or warming milk, so you don’t wait too long for your coffee
  2. Luscious quality froth that mixes smoothly with the espresso
  3. Easy to clean, with no hassle

What Is the Secura Automatic Electric Milk Frother and Warmer?

The Secura Frother is a three-in-one milk preparation machine:

  • Hot froth
  • Cold froth
  • Heated milk

So, you get a froth that is just right for your coffee, whether hot or cold. Or heated milk for a straight milk coffee if that’s your choice for the day.

The Secura MMF-003 (250ml) vs the Secura MF-020 (425ml)

Aside from their obviously different sizes, there are three main differences between the units.

1. The speed at which they froth your milk.

With the MMF-003, cold frothing takes 65 seconds. Where, on the other hand, the MF-020 takes 100 to 200 seconds to perform the cold frothing.

Volume, of course, plays a role in how long this takes. But the temperature of the milk plays its part. If you’ve just taken the milk out of the fridge, for example, both frothers will take longer.

Remember, if you’re frothing, make sure to fill only to the MAX guide mark on the inside of the container. If you overfill, the milk expands and will overflow making a, well, frothy mess.

2. The way they operate.

The smaller MMF-003 has one on/off button. This button is pressed for frothing or heating only. Pressing and holding the button for 2-3 seconds sets the frothing only operation. The flashing red light indicates the operation is complete.

Once complete, press the button again to turn the machine off.

The MF-020 has two buttons. The top button is for heating or frothing and the bottom button is for preparing cold milk.

The heating and frothing cycles both automatically stop when the milk is ready for use.

3. Ability to detach and clean the container.

The container of the larger MF-020 is dishwasher safe. Place it on the top rack and let the dishwasher do your cleaning.

You can’t do this with the smaller MMF-003, it’s manual cleaning all the way.

Are They Only for Heating Milk?

Nope, they’re more useful than that. Each model froths as well, both for cold and hot milk.

Cleaning and Use

How to Use a Secura Milk Frother
Both frothers are simple to use.

Remember to clean the container after removing it from the power base. And clean the accessories as well before you first use them.

Your first step is to fit the whisk for the type of milk you want. There is one for frothing and one for stirring. You’ll get to know which one is which pretty quickly, from the diagram in the manual. And the guide to fit the two whisks is straightforward.

There are two guide marks on the inside of the container for maximum volume:

  • The top MAX mark for HEATING only
  • The bottom MAX mark for FROTHING (also the minimum level for the smaller MMF-003)
  • A third and lowest line/symbol in the larger MF-020 container. The line indicates the minimum amount.

Ensure you fill to the appropriate line/symbol, close the lid with a tight seal, and you’re ready to go.

How Easy Is the Secura Automatic Electric Milk Frother and Warmer to Clean?

The Secura frothers have four sections you should clean after every use. Sounds a lot but there’s not much to it. The key is not to use anything abrasive.

The Base Unit:

  • Wipe it clean. With a soft damp cloth or sponge
  • Dry it with a different soft, clean cloth

The Lid:

  • Use warm soapy water
  • With the smaller MMF-003, remove the silicon ring from the lid
  • Wash both and rinse thoroughly (reassemble for easier storage)
  • There is no ring to clean on the Secura MF-020, just wash, rinse, and dry the lid

The Container:

  • Remove the milk residue around the axle with the soft brush supplied
  • Wipe the exterior with a soft damp cloth
  • Clean the interior using warm, soapy water.
  • Dry both the interior and exterior with a dry soft cloth.
  • You can wash the MF-020 container on the top rack of the dishwasher

The Whisk:

  • Remove from the whisk holder to wash in warm soapy water
  • Rinse and dry thoroughly with a soft dry cloth before storing away from children

Troubleshooting Tips

Is Your Secura Milk Frother Not Frothing?
Turn the machine off. Check to see if the whisk has been inserted into the holder correctly. Make sure the lid is placed securely onto the container. Otherwise, the whisk will not sit flat on the bottom to froth or stir properly.

Has Your Secura Milk Frother Stopped Working?
Ensure your power cord or plug is not damaged.

Check you still have power to the power point.

If you’ve just used the Secura MMF-003, you’ll have to wait 2-3 minutes before you can use it again.

If it’s still a problem, you may have a defective unit. See below for details on contacting the manufacturer.

Why is the Blue Light Flashing on the MMF-003?

The flashing light means too much milk is in use. If you let the machine continue to run it could breakdown. Turn it off and empty out to below the maximum line. You can then turn the unit back on and finish the frothing.

Milk Residue Sticking to the Bottom of the Container after Each Heating Cycle?

Don’t worry, this is normal. Cleaning is easy. Refer to the cleaning instructions earlier.

Want to Contact the Manufacturer?

If you have any product questions or if your troubleshooting fails to fix your problem, you have to write in. You can contact Secura via email at [email protected] Or complete the contact form on the Secura website.

Secura doesn’t take calls about products citing safety and liability reasons. Similarly no calls for technical enquiries. Their reason is “it may take in-depth analysis before they are able to respond.” They assign a dedicated specialist to your written enquiry and respond “as soon as possible with their answer.”

If your problem becomes a warranty issue, the key requirements are that:

  1. The frother was purchased within two years of the problem
  2. It was bought from an authorized reseller or distributor
  3. You have proof of purchase or receipt

You need to place the claim within 60 days of occurrence – this requirement is on the website not in the user manual warranty statement

And you’ll need to return to the manufacturer at your cost.

None of the sales literature or user manuals indicate where the Secura Automatic Frothers are made so it’s highly likely they’re manufactured outside of the US. But rest assured, they meet North American Electrical Standards, 120V 60Hz AC and are ETL approved.

  • Simple to use
  • Three-in-one heats milk, and froths both hot and cold milk
  • Easy to clean
  • MF-020 is dishwasher safe

  • No temperature control
  • MMF-003 has light indicator for cycle complete but no auto shut-off
  • MMF-020 takes 2-3 minutes before you can use it again

Where Can I Buy a Secura Milk Frother?

The Secura Milk Frother may be available at your local kitchen specialty stores. They are available through Amazon where you can take advantage of Amazon’s generous return policy and quick, free shipping.

What’s the Conclusion?

The Secura automatic electric milk frothers are easy to use. And they produce excellent warmed or frothed milk. Our choice is for the MMF – 020 for its automatic shut off, larger size and ease of cleaning.

But either of these units would be great if you love milk-based drinks or hot chocolate. And there relatively quick. A couple of minutes and you have the milk and froth of your choice.

Why go to your local cafe when you get what you want at home dressed as you are.

  1. René Houde

I had an issue with the thermostat as well. It was not able to heat wilk correctly anymore. So I tried to trick the thermostat to reset it.
I added a lot of ice and a bit of watter in the frother with no wisk. Turned it on for 5 sec and stopped it for 30 seconds.
    Did this one more time.
After 30 seconds, I turned it on for 2 seconds, stopped it, waisted the icy watter, poured milk rapidly and start it.
Surprize, it seems to be back to normal!!

So far so good and I will kepp you in touch if the issue comes back.
